As Typography evolved from being based on calligraphy, and started to be thought of in a more standardized and mass produced way, designers devices ways to create whole typefaces out of a limited number of shapes or modules. This led the way to the standardization of typography in movements such as Bauhaus, where function was considered more important than form.
